The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) working with Dyfed-Powys Police officers raided the call centre in Wales last month and has now ordered them to stop sending unsolicited text messages or face court.
During April and May All Claims Marketing Limited sent out almost six million unsolicited spam text messages to people's mobile phones.
The raid followed 3,488 complaints from members of the public who had received messages during the two months in question. Documents and a computer server were seized and removed for further examination at the time.
The raid was prompted by intelligence supplied by the Ministry of Justice Claims Management Regulation Unit (CMRU), the telecoms industry and the ICO’s online reporting tool.
Texting randomly generated numbers
Now the ICO has served the company with an enforcement notice that stops them sending out any more unsolicited messages. It is believed the company had been texting randomly generated numbers.
Anne Jones, assistant commissioner for Wales, said: "Following last month's raid on their offices we have now ordered All Claims Management Limited to cease sending unsolicited marketing texts. The law is the same for everyone.
“Don't send marketing texts to people without their consent and clearly identify yourself in them. If All Claims Management Limited doesn't comply it will be treated as a criminal offence."
Mobile phone users are reminded they can report spam text messages by forwarding them to 7726 (spelling out SPAM).
