Students warned over scam emails

8th September 2010

Students are being urged to watch out for scam emails that are in circulation, falsely claiming to be from Student Finance England, the online service for the Student Loans Company.

This latest scam email has the subject title ‘Urgent Verify Payment Details’ and asks for personal information including an account number/roll number and sort code. It also asks people to click on a link that looks like it goes to a secure, Directgov page, but actually goes to an alternative, fraudulent website.

Fraudulent emails

Students should not to respond to any emails like this. Anyone who wants information about student finance should visit Student Finance England’s genuine webpage on the Directgov website: http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk

This scam has recently targeted students in Lancashire. As fraudsters move and change the geographical areas they operate in, all students should also be vigilant about this type of fraud. Any UK student who has lost money to a fraud like this should report it to Action Fraud.
