Down’s Syndrome Association – Clothes recycling scam

31st August 2010

There are a number of bogus recycling bags and flyers in circulation, claiming to raise funds for the Down’s Syndrome Association by recycling clothes.

This is a scam. The flyers and recycling bags claim that the Down’s Syndrome Association is working with a textile recycler called ‘UK Textiles Ltd’ to raise funds for the charity. The flyer uses the Down’s Syndrome Association’s logo and web address, and quotes their charity number. The Down’s Syndrome Association has nothing to do with these flyers and does not currently raise funds by recycling clothes via a third party.

Do not leave clothing for bogus charity collections

The Down’s Syndrome Association is urging people not to leave any items of clothing for this company to collect. The charity is also advising residents not to confront the people making the collections, as they may be dangerous. Anyone who sees the licence plate number of one of the collection vehicles should make a note of it, if it’s safe to discreetly do so, and pass it on to the Down’s Syndrome Association, who is liaising with Trading Standards.
