Identity fraud affects 1.8million people a year

During National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, Action Fraud is reminding you how to keep your identity safe.

Fraudsters gain £1,000 on average from every stolen identity, according to the National Fraud Authority (NFA), the government agency that runs Action Fraud. In very serious cases, it can take you 200 hours to repair the damage done to your identity – that’s the equivalent to a year’s annual leave.

Protect yourself from wi-jacking

Internet users are being warned about the risks of insecure wireless networks after it was found that nearly half of all home Wi-Fi networks can be hacked in less than five seconds.

Once a wireless network has been hacked into, hackers have access to your personal details, including your passwords and usernames which they could use to commit identity fraud and undertake other illegal activities in your name. This could include purchasing illegal pornography, selling stolen goods and view your private transactions.

Trading Standards is warning residents to beware of scammers who may phone to confirm their bank details prior to their Winter Fuel Allowance being paid.

This is a scam – you will never receive a phone call asking you to give personal details over the phone for your Winter Fuel Allowance.

Who viewed your Facebook profile? It’s a scam

A renewed scam on Facebook encourages users to find out who has been viewing their profile by clicking on a link.

This is a scam. There is no legitimate way for users to find out who has been looking at their profile on the social networking site. Clicking on the link is a trick by scammers to share the link further, meaning that more and more people are likely to fall victim.

Credit cards taken after cold calls

Police are warning the public to beware after an elderly man was phoned by fraudsters and then had his bank cards taken.

The victim was called twice in the period of a few days by a man who claimed to be from Natwest Bank. The caller said that he was a courier who had been asked to collect the man’s credit cards from his house in preparation for replacement cards being delivered.

Parrot and puppy scams target pet-lovers

People across the UK have reported scams involving buying pets for little or no cost.

In one scam, families have bought birds in response to adverts offering baby parrots for £155. The birds were delivered, but died a few days later. It is believed that the birds were not parrots, but parakeets from the wild, who died due to the shock of being kept in captivity. The sellers’ mobile phones were disconnected after the birds were delivered.

A new campaign is targeting teenagers to make sure they know how to shop online safely and spot fake websites.

The scheme comes after Trading Standards received more than 3,000 complaints from consumers about goods or services bought over the internet in the last year. Most complaints were about defective goods, substandard service or failure to deliver or late delivery.
