Some householders have recently received scam phone calls, where callers are purporting to be from a company called 'Advance PC Care'.
Victims are told that their computers are vulnerable and that they need to download software to rectify the situation. The callers are telling individuals to type the url of a legitimate seeming website into the browsers of their computers. This website allows the scammers to take over control of the computers.
This scam has been recently reported to be occurring on Jersey. People across the UK should be on their guard against this type of scam.
Protect yourself from scam callers
- Do not believe callers who claim that your PC is broken and do not allow them to convince you to download the bogus software.
- Be wary of scam callers and never give out personal information over the phone, by text or email to unidentified companies.
- Research the company you are dealing with before taking advantage of any promotions and if something doesn’t add up, do not proceed with them.
- If you are unsure and cannot verify if a caller is legitimate then do not carry on with the call.
