Council tax refund scam

6th October 2010

Residents are being urged not to fall victim to telephone scammers who say they can get them a refund on their council tax.
The fraudsters ask for victims’ bank details in order to process the refund immediately. Councils are warning that they will not call householders to discuss council tax refunds unless the householder has specifically requested this. Anyone who has credit in their council tax account will automatically be sent a statement giving details of any credit on the account.

Watch out for council tax scammers

Councils across the UK have become aware of this scam. As fraudsters move and change the geographical areas they operate in, all UK residents should be vigilant about this type of fraud. Any UK resident who has lost money to a fraud like this should report it to Action Fraud.
