Car parking fine scam

15th September 2010

Motorists are being warned to stay alert after a number of fake penalty notices have been placed on vehicles.

The counterfeit notices say they are for highways obstructions, such as parking on pavements. However, the notices state they are issued by a private company, rather than the police or local council, and print the phone number of a call centre.

Car users are being reminded that any penalty notices for highways obstructions would be issued by the police, and not a private company. Similarly, parking fines for infringements in council owned car parks would be issued by the local council.

Check penalty tickets are genuine

So far, this scam has been reported by motorists in Cheshire and Staffordshire. As fraudsters move and change the geographical areas they operate in, all UK residents should also be vigilant about this type of fraud.

Anyone who is not sure whether or not a parking notice is genuine is being advised to contact their local Trading Standards. Anyone who has lost money to a scam like this should report it to Action Fraud.
