Residents warned of fake tax letters

Police are warning residents to beware of letters claiming they could be eligible for a reduction in their council tax.

The warning was issued by Somerset Police after residents in the local area received the letters. The scam involves offering a re-assessment of people's council tax band in exchange for bank details.

Always remember you can have your council tax band checked for free by contacting your local valuation office. If you want to check your council tax banding is correct, you can contact the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 503 600 or by visiting their website. They are responsible for setting council tax bands on all domestic properties and will be able to review bands and give appropriate advice.

Sedgemoor District Council released a warning earlier in the month about cold callers claiming to work for the council offering tax refunds. The caller would then ask for bank account details to process the refund.
