Reporting a fraud - Three things you need to know

You need around 20 minutes to complete the form. Once you have started the form you will need to complete it in one session, so before you begin, please make sure you have any relevant information to hand (for example names, dates, information about the suspect, and details of how any money was lost).

Action Fraud refers all fraud crime cases and information on fraud to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. This is run by the City of London Police - the lead force for fraud in the UK.

Please be aware that each report cannot be investigated individually, although the information you provide will aid the police in building up a national picture of fraud.

We need to check that Action Fraud can take your report

1. Does the fraud you are reporting involve benefits, tax or a passport application?


2. Did the fraud take place in the UK, with the victim based in the UK?




Additional information - How your report will be used

  • Action Fraud aims to make the process of reporting fraud crime or passing information about fraud easier. By reporting a fraud crime or passing on information about fraud, you are giving anti-fraud agencies vital information that they need to protect you and others from fraudsters. At the same time you could also help to bring the offenders to justice.
  • You will need to complete the online form in one session. If you spend more than 40 minutes on a page before pressing ‘Next’ then the session will expire.
  • In some cases the police and other law enforcement agencies may want to contact you for further details. It is therefore important that you keep any relevant information about the fraud.

Reporting a Fraud or passing on information about Fraud crime

  • The form will take you through a series of questions about the incident you are reporting, including questions about the suspect. Any mandatory fields are marked with a symbol.
  • Please make sure that you are happy with the information you have entered on each page before continuing. It is possible to go back to a previous question in the tool using the “previous” button at the bottom of the page please do NOT use the “Back” button within your browser as this can cause reporting problems.
  • Note: if you wish to make a report but want to remain anonymous you can not complete the web form. You will need to contact the Action Fraud contact centre who can complete the report for you. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040. Text phone users can ring 0300 123 2050.
