Safer Internet Day 2015 is being celebrated globally today with the slogan ‘Let’s create a better internet together’.
Coordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
Action Fraud is supporting Safer Internet Day by publicising the following top tips to help young people to protect themselves becoming a victim of online fraud.
- Never share your personal details with anyone online, especially don’t share your full name or date of birth as these details can be used by criminals to steal your identity and commit fraud.
- If anyone asks you for whatever reason to send money to them online, always consult a parent or guardian and ask for their opinion.
- If you ever buy anything online, make sure that you’re extremely careful about which websites you buy from. Always look for a padlock image in the web browser as this indicates that it’s a secure site.
- If you ever buy anything on an auction site such as Ebay, check the sellers history and make sure that they have been rated well in the past.
- If you get sent emails that say you may have won something but that you need to send money in advance to get your prize- ignore them. These types of emails are sent by fraudsters to try and trick you into sending them money.
